How a Mars Launch Window Is Chosen

Launch windows aren't about convenience — they're dictated almost entirely by how much fuel a trajectory needs.

You don't launch toward where Mars is — you launch toward where it will be

A spacecraft bound for Mars can't fly in a straight line; it has to leave Earth's orbit around the Sun and coast onto a new orbit that intersects Mars's path at some future date. The most fuel-efficient version of this manoeuvre is called a Hohmann transfer orbit — an ellipse that just touches Earth's orbit at one end and Mars's orbit at the other.

Because the transfer itself takes many months, mission planners have to launch when Mars is still well ahead of Earth in its orbit, timed so that Mars arrives at the meeting point exactly as the spacecraft does. That's why launch happens roughly 1 to 3 months before opposition, not on the date of closest approach.

Why windows repeat every ~26 months

Earth completes an orbit in 365 days; Mars takes 687 days. Because Earth moves faster, it periodically laps Mars, and the geometry that makes a Hohmann transfer efficient recurs on a cycle called the synodic period — about 779.9 days, or a little over 25 months, for this particular pair of planets. Miss a window, and the next efficient opportunity is roughly two years away, not next month.

Real missions, real windows

This cycle is visible in the historical launch record. NASA's InSight lander launched in May 2018; the Perseverance rover and China's Tianwen-1 mission both launched in July 2020, roughly one synodic cycle later; the next major window fell around late 2022, and another around late 2024 into 2025. Each cluster of missions launching within weeks of each other, from different countries, is a direct consequence of everyone aiming at the same orbital mechanics.

Missing a window doesn't mean missing Mars entirely

It's possible to reach Mars outside the standard window, but it costs far more fuel and usually more travel time, since the spacecraft has to fly a less efficient trajectory to make the geometry work. That's why almost every crewed Mars mission concept, and nearly all robotic ones, is built around hitting the roughly 20-day launch window that opens every 26 months.
