Which Planet Is Actually Closest to Earth?

On any single day, Venus or Mars might be nearest — but averaged over time, the answer is surprisingly Mercury.

Quick answer: On any given day, Venus, Mars, or even Mercury can be the nearest planet to Earth, depending on where all three bodies sit in their orbits. The intuitive answer: Venus

Venus is Earth's nearest planet by minimum possible distance — at its closest approach, Venus comes to within about 38 million kilometres of Earth, closer than any other planet ever gets. This is the fact most textbooks and planetariums repeat, and it's true as far as it goes: Venus holds the record for the single closest planetary approach to Earth.

The counterintuitive answer: it depends how you average

"Closest on average" is a different question from "closest at best," and it turns out to matter a great deal which method you use to calculate an average. A widely discussed analysis — using a method sometimes called the point-circle method, which averages the distance between two planets across every possible combination of orbital positions, not just snapshots in time — found that Mercury is, on average, the closest planet to every other planet in the solar system, including Earth. This runs against the intuitive assumption that a planet's immediate orbital neighbours (Venus for Earth, Earth for Mars) must also be its closest on average.

The reason comes down to orbital geometry: because Mercury's orbit is small and close to the Sun, it never strays especially far from any other planet, even though it also rarely gets extremely close. Venus and Mars, by contrast, spend a lot of their orbital time on the far side of the Sun from Earth, which drags their time-averaged distance up substantially, even though their single closest approaches are more dramatic.

So which answer is "right"?

Both are correct — they're just answering different questions. If the question is "which planet can get closest to Earth," the answer is Venus. If the question is "which planet is closest to Earth on a randomly chosen day, averaged over centuries," the point-circle method suggests Mercury. Most everyday usage of "closest planet" means the first sense, which is why Venus remains the popularly cited answer.

Why the answer keeps changing day to day

Regardless of which long-run average you prefer, the nearest planet on any single day genuinely does rotate between Venus, Mars, and Mercury, simply because all the planets are constantly moving along their own orbits at their own speeds.
